Asus Accessories Gaming Series: Augmented Reality

This week in our brand new and exciting gaming series, we will discuss Augmented Reality also known as AR. In recent years, AR has become more and more present in our day-to-day life. AR was first popularized through gaming, however it has numerous practical applications and a world of potential in many different industries.

One of the most famous AR games, Pokémon GO has demonstrated that after years of effort and work, AR has been completely adopted by mainstream culture. One factor contributing to the rise of AR phone apps and games is that smartphones have become powerful enough to handle this complex technology. The Asus ROG Phone 2 is one of the best devices on the market to provide a state-of-the-art AR experience in games like Pokémon GO.

A little history about AR

Augmented Reality was invented by Ivan Sutherland in a Harvard lab. The premise of AR was mostly to demonstrate the potential of the technology, however it was difficult at first to spread this technology globally as it originally ran on a computer with a head-mounted display system. This is the main reason this technology remained known only to computer science enthusiasts.

How AR finally succeeded

Many companies over the last 5 years attempted to come up with applications that integrated AR in order increase public interest and make this technology part of our life. A smartphone like the Asus ROG Phone is powerful enough to run AR in the palm of your hand, and software companies are now investing time to design and develop useful applications other than gaming. It is certain however that gaming remains the first, most enjoyable, and effective way to proliferate public use of AR.

Now, tech giants like Google are trying to be a step ahead by using AR in order to help you in your day-to-day life. For example, Google Maps is now able to use AR to guide you through a city.

You can also bring your Asus ZenPad to a museum to learn more about a painting, an ancient tool and much more.

This is only the tip of the iceberg, as now there are applications for tourism, translation, sky maps… to only name a few.

Dr. Chris Bauer at the University of London, conducted a study showing that wearable devices have made the consumer expect more and more from new technologies. Those expectations are so high that consumers want these technologies to be seamlessly integrated into their environment and provide a rich visual experience.

Imagine all you could do fully equipped with a Asus ROG Phone, ZenPad tablet and ZenWatch.

ASUS is also an actor in the AR scene. At CES 2018, they introduced the ASUS HC102 - a headset to provide a Mixed Reality experience. This AR device, compared to its competitor, didn’t require any external sensors. Everything you need, such as the gyroscope, accelerometer and magnetometer, to have an amazing experience was packed inside the HC102. It makes the Asus AR headset easy to travel with, as you only need the device itself and 2 controllers to allow the user to interact.
