How does a smartphone buzzer work?

Vibration in phones is highly important, and not just when you don’t want your ringtone to go off at the movies! There are many other situations when it is important to know when you have received a call or message discreetly, such as when working in a quiet office or watching a performance and do not want to disturb others. Above all, vibration from a smartphone is the only practical way that a person who is deaf can reliably be alerted to phone notifications, a fact that many hearing people may not have considered.

So how exactly does this important mechanism function? Within your smartphone, there is a very small motor called a permanent magnet direct current motor (PMDC Motor). This is a simple type of motor that is used widely in toys, electrical toothbrushes, food mixers and many other electronics where precise control is not necessary. The motor in a cell phone is slightly off balance, so when the motor rotates it literally shakes from being constantly displaced, causing your phone to vibrate. To be more specific, the type of DC motor most commonly found in smartphones is a eccentric rotating mass vibration motor (ERM), “eccentric” because of the purposefully offset or imbalanced weight.
