How to Choose the Right Charger for Your Asus Laptop

Are you looking for a new Asus charger for your Asus laptop to replace the lost or damaged one? Perhaps, you'd like to have a spare for the office?

First and foremost, it's important that you choose an Asus brand power adapter for your Asus laptop to ensure that no damage will be caused to your device by poorly made chargers. Asus takes great care in designing and manufacturing products specifically for each laptop model. Protect your investment and opt for an Asus-branded charger.

What are the main components of a charger?

Each adapter consists of a cord and a plug that carry current from a wall socket to the adapter (central unit), then convert the current into direct current (DC) used by the computer through the second cord and second connector.

The Connector

The connector plugs into your laptop. The size is specific to your device. Nothing is more frustrating than getting your Asus charger (AC adapter) home just to realize it doesn’t fit your laptop. We will show you below how to avoid this issues altogether. However, you should get this information from the documentation provided with your Asus Laptop.

AC adaptator

The size of these varies greatly; however, the vital difference has to do with the specific with its core function. The AC adapter will convert AC (alternating current) power from a wall outlet (different in different countries) to the DC (direct current) power used by your Asus Laptop.

Voltage

Voltage is what pulls electrical energy into the laptop. If the voltage of the laptop is different from that provided by the adapter, it won't create the correct charge needed to pull the electrical energy into the laptop. You do not want to damage your laptop by using an adapter with the wrong voltage. For example, a voltage that is higher than necessary will overload the circuits and cause havoc. Voltage is a measure of how much potential energy the laptop can use.

Amperage

Amperage, also known as current, is what gives the laptop enough power to run. It is the amount of electrical energy that flows into the laptop at any given time. Laptops need the correct amount of consistent energy flow to power all the circuits within the device. Usually, voltage is a measure of how much potential energy the laptop can use. The amperage on laptop power adapters needs to match or exceed the amperage required by the laptop.

Watts

One watt is the rate at which electrical work is performed when a current of one ampere (A) flows across an electrical potential difference of one volt (V). The number of watts is equal to amps multiplied by volts. Output wattage must be greater than or equal to that required by the laptop.

Cord and plug

The shapes of plugs vary by country. Today we travel more and more. You should be aware of the type of plug used in the country you are visiting some small plug “adapters” are available. These function only as “adapting” the shape of the plugs of your country of origin to the shape of the plug of the country you are visiting.
American appliances run on 110 volts, while European appliances are 220 volts. Most devices are "dual voltage," which means they work on both American and European current.
If you see a range of voltages printed on the item or its plug (such as "110–220"), you're OK in Europe.

Note: some older devices (and handheld gaming systems) aren't equipped to deal with the voltage difference — you'll need a separate, bulky converter. Beware - Just because the plug somehow fits doesn’t mean the voltage is correct.
